The Cow Shed Bar and Dance Hall
Queenstown/Millenbeck, Virginia · On the western shore of the Corrotoman River

“Good Fishing, Boating and Bathing in Good Old Salt Water. Real Southern Cooked Meals, Reasonable Rates.”
With the introduction of the automobile came the public’s fascination with touring and, as a result, convenient accommodations soon began to develop. The construction of additional roads and bridges connecting the Northern Neck with the mainland in 1927 and, again in 1955, brought an overwhelming number of tourists and weekend visitors to Lancaster County, VA.
The rural nature of the county successfully supported roadside cabin camps or tourist camps. No longer standing, the Cow Shed Bar and Dance Hall was “the place to be” on Saturday nights between the 1930s and 1960s.
Promoting itself as a summer resort, the Cow Shed included waterfront log cabin rentals. A few of those cabins still stand, withering slowly, in a nearby wooded area.
The property, constructed between 1925 and 1930 by Charles F. Leach and S.W. Sawdy, is aptly located along Cow Shed Road in Queenstown/Millenbeck where it sat on the western shore of the Corrotoman River.
This original painting is a commissioned artist’s replication of an original postcard from a 1930’s advertisement.
